Stop using basic as an insult
Leave me and my Love bracelet alone
I’m pretty lucky— the most negative comments I get on my videos usually look something like “this is so basic,” “I’ve seen this before,” or simply “boring.” While it doesn’t bother me on a personal level, I do find it rather annoying in general. There is nothing wrong with liking things other people like (that is quite literally how things get popular), and I will die on that hill.
Vintage Levi’s? Basic! Chanel ballet flats? Basic! Cartier bracelet? Basic! Instead of trying to declare that something isn’t cool, perhaps just say that you don’t like it and move on. Everyone is loving the Still Here Sport jeans right now because they’re different, but when those inevitably become too popular, will they, too, be labeled “basic?”
What fascinates me about this criticism is that it has very little to do with the actual item in question. A white tee shirt doesn't suddenly become worse because a million other people discovered it. A pair of jeans doesn't become less flattering because they're popular. Yet somewhere along the way, we've decided that the worst thing a person can be is predictable.
